Getting to Know DavidMulliganDJ: From Trance Fan to Twitch DJ

Based in Glasgow, Scotland, David Mulligan is a passionate trance DJ whose journey into electronic music began long before he ever stepped behind the decks. At 33 years old, with his 34th birthday approaching this August, David has spent years developing his sound, building a supportive community, and sharing his love of uplifting and tech trance with audiences online and beyond.

Discovering Electronic Music

David’s introduction to electronic music started shortly after leaving school when he found himself drawn to EDM. However, it wasn’t until around 2011 that he discovered trance music, thanks to a recommendation from his younger brother.

“My little brother told me to listen to an episode of A State of Trance one day, and that really opened the door to trance music for me.”

That moment sparked a passion that continues to shape his musical journey today.

Taking the Leap into DJing

While music had always been a major part of David’s life, it was during the lockdown period that he finally decided to try DJing for himself.

“I’ve always loved listening to music, and some friends suggested I give DJing a go. I tried it and immediately loved doing it.”

David initially learned using VirtualDJ before progressing to a Pioneer DDJ-200 controller. As his confidence grew, he also gained experience playing on larger club-style setups.

Although he has been DJing for around five years, he feels his biggest improvement came a couple of years ago after spending time practising on professional decks at a friend’s house.

Finding His Sound

Like many trance fans, David cites Armin van Buuren as one of his biggest influences when he was starting out. Over time, his musical tastes evolved from EDM into a deeper focus on trance.

Today, his sets are built around uplifting and tech trance, with progressive music occasionally making an appearance.

When asked to describe his DJ style in three words, David chose:

“Uplifting, tech, and happy vibes.”

One track that perfectly captures his current sound is Kuro by Nikolauss.

While he enjoys keeping up with new releases, David also enjoys digging through older records and sharing forgotten classics with his audience.

“Most people play the newest trance tracks, but I enjoy bringing out some of the older tunes as well.”

Behind the Decks

Preparing a set is all about selecting music that resonates with both himself and his Twitch audience.

“I look for the best tunes that I like and that I think people watching on Twitch will enjoy.”

When it comes to performance, David prefers a balanced approach, combining preparation with spontaneity.

“It’s a bit of both. I plan some things out but also like to read the room and go with the flow.”

One of his most memorable DJ experiences came in 2024 when he played live for the first time at the Keep3rlit event in Manchester, a milestone moment in his DJ career.

Building Community Through Streaming

David’s love of music was the driving force behind his decision to begin streaming on Twitch. What started as a way to share his passion has since opened doors to live performances and introduced him to a thriving global community.

“The Twitch DJ community is so supportive. Everyone wants to see each other do well.”

Streaming has helped him gain opportunities to play live events, something he remains incredibly grateful for.

His motivation remains simple:

“The love of the music and the people who support my stream.”

For David, community means friendship, fun, and support, qualities that have become central to his streaming experience.

Life with The Saturday Stream Team

David first became involved with The Saturday Stream Team after being invited by Wilko_DJ.

“When Wilko asked me to play for the team, I was delighted.”

The supportive atmosphere of the raid train format quickly made an impression on him.

“Everyone wants everyone else to do well.”

His favourite Saturday Stream Team memory remains his very first appearance on one of the raid trains, a moment that marked the beginning of many great experiences within the community.

He believes communities like TSST play a vital role in helping DJs grow and develop.

“Everyone supports each other, and that’s really important.”

For anyone considering joining a raid train for the first time, David’s advice is simple:

“Just have a good time and people will support you.”

Music Discovery and Favourite Tracks

When searching for new music, David regularly turns to Beatport, looking for tracks with strong melodies that immediately connect with him.

A few artists he believes deserve attention are Will Rees and Paul Denton, both of whom continue to make an impact within the trance scene.

Asked about tracks that never get old, David highlighted:

RAMsterdam (JvD Remix) by RAM
What Are You Waiting For (Will Rees Remix) by Craig Connelly featuring Tara Louise

Both remain permanent fixtures in his playlist.

Beyond the Music

When he’s not behind the decks, David enjoys spending time on his PS5 and attending trance events whenever possible.

If given the chance to play anywhere in the world, his dream destination would be Ibiza.

As for a dream back-to-back set, he’d happily share the decks with either Paul Denton or Will Rees.

One fact viewers may not know?

“I do enjoy a good beer!” he laughs.

Perhaps the best advice he’s ever received is to enjoy himself and not be too hard on himself, something he admits can sometimes be a challenge.

Looking Ahead

For the future, David’s goals are refreshingly straightforward.

“I just want to keep playing the music I love.”

While music production isn’t currently on the agenda, fans can continue to expect quality trance selections, uplifting vibes, and a genuine passion for the music that inspires him.

Whether he’s streaming from Glasgow, playing on a raid train, or performing live at an event, David remains committed to sharing the very best music he can find and creating an enjoyable experience for everyone who tunes in.
